Story
This comic series follows Professor Philip Mortimer, a leading British scientist and his friend, Captain Francis Blake on their adventures of espionage. Each turn they are confronted with their sworn enemy Colonel Olrik. Their adventures take them throughout the world and even into the realm of science fiction, time travel and once to Atlantis!
Why we chose it
A story suggested by members of the Story Museum Comic Club.
Where it came from
The characters in these adventures were all inspired by Edgar J Jacobs’ friends. Professor Mortimer was based on his friend and collaborator Jacques Van Melkebeke and Captain Blake was modelled on his friend Jacques Laudy. Edgar J Jacobs even included himself in his stories as Colonel Olrik’s appearance is based on his self-portrait.
Where it went next
From 1946 onwards Blake and Mortimer and their adventures appeared regularly in the Tintin Magazine. After Edgar J Jacobs died in 1987 his final story was finished by Bob de Moor. After his death many other artists and writers continued on the adventures of Blake and Mortimer and many more stories are in production to be released.
Radio, TV series, board games and computer games have been made featuring the characters of Blake and Mortimer.
