A deeply moving story with a strong human rights message.
Story
Subhi is a 10 year old Rohingyian refugee. He was born in an Australian detention centre. All he knows is life behind a fence, but his imagination takes him far beyond, into a world of oceans and freedom. One night he meets Jimmie, a scruffy, impatient girl, who lives on the other side of the fence.
Why we chose it
A simply told but hard- hitting story which explores what it is to be a refugee. Zena Fraillon wrote the story to highlight the individual stories behind the statistics and politics and to give a voice to the displaced and detained.
Where it came from
Zana Fraillon lives in Melboune, Australia with her husband and three sons. She says her inspiration came from real life accounts of refugees in Australia and the shocking way in which asylum seekers are treated throughout the world.
