Enter an immersive universe where your choices determine the outcome of your journey.
Story
In this RPG players embody a child who has fallen down a black void, finding themselves in an underground realm ruled by monsters. In a journey to make it back to the surface; players must decide whether they defeat each of their enemies ‘non-violently’ or destroy them in the game’s turn-based combat style. These choices will impact the outcome of your journey and make you want to play the game all over again.
Why we chose it
Every minute detail contributes to the game’s beautiful, humourous and endearing nature. From the enchanting soundtrack and charming characters to the amusing awkward silences and even the fonts used; every aspect of the game contributes to the immersive universe the player experiences.
Where it came from
Undertale was developed and published by indie creator Toby Fox, who wanted to create a game with ‘emotional power, humour and wonder’. Undertale is commonly compared to the RPG Earthbound. Fox has stated that as a child he cherished the game so dearly he cannot determine which parts of Undertale were or weren’t inspired by Earthbound.
Where it went next
After its release, Undertale became a huge success, winning a BAFTA for it’s narrative and an NAVGTR for its original role play as well as being nominated for several other awards. The game is now considered a cult, mainstream game and one of the best games ever made.
Associated stories
Due to the overwhelming success of Undertale, Toby Fox went on to create a sequel named Deltarune with a similar narrative. Players control the character Kris, a human child who lives in the realm inhabited by monsters. Kris and classmate Suzie fall into the ‘dark world’ where they journey though in order to return home.
